into America.
we can’t tell
up from down––
right from wrong––
freedom from despair.
we claim to protect
the vulnerable––
but we are all
vulnerable.
generosity means
having enough
to share––
but do we?
sun rise brings
our daily worries––
our daily bread
is running
away.
what’s wrong?
everything’s
wrong.
society is a code
of agreed upon
rules––
but our rules are
falling and
our conscience is
forgetful––
our moral compass
has been lost
& liars are
ranting.
greed
is the smirking
serpent
in the weeds.
we are swirling
in a maelstrom
of misconception
where even
the young
have
no
hope.
we grasp for
whatever
to believe in––
but nobody’s
ego
agrees.
democracy
is an act of faith
& trust––
all of us need
to read & believe
the same
scripture––
to put trust back
in our brothers
& sisters
where it
belongs––
because
united means
all of us––
together––
brave &
breathing free
with our feet
on solid
sacred
ground.
