through the giddy night

if i’m not mistaken, i’ve had this
fouton & frame for almost 20
years. i bought them as a set at
a fouton joint that was going
   out of business in philadelphia.
they’ve come with me to the
west coast & back & gathered
   in the harvest of my
dreams.

this new comforter from my childhood
is turning brown with age &
fraying. & here are my pillows
stained with the sweat of so
   many sleepless nights, ravaged
to a pulp by so much sickness &
   endless restless
turning.

these are the souls that cherish me,
   that love without exception. these
are the hearts that never close,
   watching over me through the
   giddy
night.
