principles of economics

economics belongs
to the people

economics isn’t
chance

economics has a heart,
a soul & muscular
guts

economics isn’t greedy
competition––
it’s confidence, competence,
cooperation &
trust––
a human
world yearning to
grow

economics is one rock
fitting firmly on top
of another to build
a stone wall

it is corn leaping upward
in the night

it is the granite
mountain
of promises
that won’t go
away

it is the craft of angels
that creates
what never
was––
the reason why everything is balanced
in harmony on
a twirling sphere

it is the sign of plenty
not the synonym of
want

one day there’s enough
the next day there’s
more

economics is the visceral
wisdom of humanity inclusive of
animals, plants, air, water, rocks, minerals
& dreams

it is the womb of
breathing earth
where
every moment is an investment
in forever

we are here because evolution
moves forward, because
entropy is denied, because
every particle of
every atom that fills
us
does not know
time

earthquakes, tornadoes, meteors, volcanoes,
floods, drought & pestilence
have their give & take
in the equilibrium of
things

economics is the mark
of birth & death
in the book of
eternity

what in this human-
dominated world is
uncorrupted by
our hands?

we are nature’s spoiled
children

how did we happen to discover
greed? did we ourselves invent
selfishness?

how did we learn to kill
so many of our own
& of every kind?
what God could have
taught us
to steal & to
plunder?

& where did we find
that deceptive word,
“mine?”

is economics is merely
about ‘me?’ that weary
traveler without a
name

is it naïve to hope
that the force of
economics is sharing?
the way the lion shares the
savanna with the
antelope? the way
water shares
wetness? The way
this entire universe inhabits a single
sky?

economics is the truth & the light of
our earth-house-hold & of
the stars

we forget & ignore our
blessings
at our world’s great
sorrow
