real amerikans don’t like
competition
where buffaloes or indians
roamed––
we disappeared
them without
regret
when there’s coal
in the ground,
why let a mountaintop
stand in the way?
we once were
the tired, the humble,
the poor,
the huddled masses
yearning…
& then we grabbed
whatever
we could
& ran
we were richest nation
with a middle class
for a time,
& then we
aristocratically plutocratized––
even greed
runs out of gas
unless you can pay
for the oil
the immigrants come
& we fear them––
at least the 2nd
amendment still
protects
our guns!
maybe––if we lived
just a bit smarter––
we’d realize we’re
all one glorious, squabbling
family––
& we could find
a way to work
our way out of the mess
we’re in
together.
